WW1 military pass - Artillery specialist, sound tracking
Couldn't load pickup availability
WW1 period, somewhat unconventional, German military ID (militärpass), issued to Friedrich Wippermann. He was born in March 1899, in the city of Basel, and enrolled in the German military in August 1917, serving until January 1920. He was trained to use the standard Gewehr 98 rifle.
What makes this ID unusual is the unconventional cover (which is loose / has become detached from the pages), with his name written in pen, and the military formation with which he served. Translating the entries was very difficult, but it’s certain that he served some time at the large military base located at Beverloo, in German occupied Belgium, in 1917. There are two interesting unit stamps in the ID that indicate that at some point he served with a specialist artillery unit, namely Schallmesstrupp 70. The purpose of these specialized Schallmesstrupp units was to locate enemy artillery batteries using sound measurements, in order to help guide German counter artillery fire to destroy these artillery pieces. He must have had decent math / trigonometry skills to be part of this formation.
Cool WW1 German ID, definitely needs more research. Rare unit designation.
