WW1-era German Militarpass ID booklet issued to Kannonier Johann Klein. Born in June 1892, he served in artillery units and fought on both the Eastern and Western fronts. He spent the earlier part of the war in the East (Feldzug 1915/16 im Osten) and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK2) around Christmas 1916. He spent a few months in a hospital (May-July 1916, wound or illness unspecified), then fought extensively in France from mid-1917 to the end of war. Quite a long battlelog, he saw action along the Somme, at St. Mihiel, St. Quentin, as well as along the Marne and in the 1918 German offensives. He initially served with 5. Ersatz batterie II Ersatz Abteilung Feld Artillerie Regiment nr. 61, later serving with 1. Batterie Fuss Battalion 157. He ended the war as an NCO (Unteroffizier) and left military service in January 1919.
