1st edition Wehrpass issued to Alfred Gasch in late July 1937. Born in April 1898, Gasch resided in the city of Dessau, in Eastern Germany. He served in the German army from October 1914 to March 1919, serving in various units belonging to Infanterie Regiment 179 during WW1. This Saxon regiment, part of the 24th Division, fought extensively on the Western Front. He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK2), the Iron Cross 1st Class (EK1), the Friedrich August medal for service in the Saxon army, and the Wound badge during WW1. He was awarded the Hindenburg Cross for his WW1 service in November 1934. He began WW1 as a Gefreiter, but reached the officer rank of Leutnant der Reserve in October 1916, at age 18. He was recalled to military service in 1937 serving in staff positions with the rank of Leutnant, being promoted to Oberleutnant in August 1939. According to the stamps and entries he served from 1937 to February 1943, serving with several staff / administrative units, notably Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 398. Quite a few entries that detail his uniform / helmet size, his time on leave, time spent in hospitals and a couple of bonus payments.
Good number of unit assignment entries for his WW1 and WW2 military service. Unfortunately the pages have become detached from the cover, but the Wehrpass is in otherwise good condition, no missing pages or denazified pages. Interesting ID booklet for a well decorated soldier who saw extensive combat in WW1 and rose from the rank of private to senior Lieutenant.
