Late WW2 German “Z-Karte” (Zuteilungskarte) ID card, issued to Josef Spalek (born in July 1921). These cards were given to men whose mandatory service in Deutscher Volkssturm was to be deferred. Josef Spalek’s employment is listed as “electrical engineer”, so his deferment is likely connected to his professional qualifications. The card is undated, but does specify that he is exempted from the “first call up of the Volkssturm”, which occurred in October-November 1944. Z-Karte were quite popular and sought after, yet fairly difficult to obtain. Interestingly the card appears to have Luftwaffe unit stamps on the reverse. Wear and damage along the edges, but remains legible and isn’t very fragile.
