Medal and document grouping for Obergefreiter Alois Wörsdörfer, an infantry soldier who was killed on the Eastern Front in the summer of 1943. Consists of

-Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK2), unmarked ring, with original full-length ribbon. In good condition, showing a little age and wear. Comes with its accompanying award document, stating that Gefreiter Wörsdörfer was awarded his Iron Cross on September 28th 1941 (presumably for action on the Eastern Front), while serving with 14th Kompanie, Infanterie Regiment 70. The document has the signature of the divisional commander General der Infanterie Otto Stapf, who was the commander of the 111 Infanterie-Division in 1941.

-Handwritten letter of condolence sent to Wörsdörfer’s mother, written by Wörsdörfer’s company commander, Leutnant und Kompanie führer Reimann. He writes that Obergefreiter Wörsdörfer was killed while defending a position held along the Mius front, in the Donbass region of Ukraine. He died instantly from a shot to the chest (Brustschuss) on August 19th 1943. The company commander describes him as a brave soldier who would be missed by his comrades and apologizes for having written the letter in late September (he mentions that the company had been in heavy combat, which makes sense given that Soviets launched a major offensive in that area).

-Typed letter, dated October 17th 1943, written by the same Leutnant Reimann and addressed to Wörsdörfer’s family. He writes to inform the family that Wörsdörfer would have a posthumous promotion to Unteroffizier, backdated to August 1st 1943, a couple of weeks before his death. Interesting letter, I suppose this promotion would have had an impact on the pension awarded to his family. The letter indicates that Wörsdörfer likely served with 10. Panzerjäger Kompanie, Grenadier Regiment 70 when he died.

Neat grouping for a soldier who appears to have seen extensive combat from 1941 to 1943 with Infanterie Regiment 70. This regiment saw action in the Battle of Kiev (1941), fighting its way into Southern Russia during the 1942 summer offensive (Rostov, the Caucasus, etc) and being assigned to the reformed 6th Army in the spring of 1943. When Obergefreiter Wörsdörfer was killed the regiment was defending in the Taganrog area, along the Russian / Ukrainian border.
