December 22nd 1944 dated large German press photograph (around 18cm x 13cm). The inscription on the reverse states that it’s a photo of Knight’s Cross winner Captain Hugo Schwark (Ritterkreuzträger Hauptmann Schwark, 1914 - 1990) visiting one of his men at the front, sharing a bottle of wine with a soldier in a bunker to celebrate the Christmas season. Schwark had been awarded the Knight’s Cross in October 1944, his Iron Cross 1st class, Infantry Assault Badge and Close Combat clasp are visible on his uniform in the photo. He served with the 349. Volksgrenadier Division, which in late 1944 was defending East Prussia, indicating that this photo was taken somewhere in East Prussia. The photo has a period copyright Berlin based stamp on the reverse (Transocean- Europress Berlin). Very collectible late-war image of a Knight’s Cross winner at the front.
