WW2 German army photo postcard of Generaloberst Walter Heitz, who commanded the VIII Army Corps during the Battle of Stalingrad. He was awarded the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves. He was a tough, hard-nosed commander who pushed his troops hard and was an enthusiastic backer of the NSDAP. He surrendered in Stalingrad on January 31st 1943 and died in Soviet captivity in early 1944.
