Autographed photo - WW1 Generalleutnant Ludwig v. Tutschek, Alpenkorps
Undated, though likely 1920’s or 30’s dated photograph of Generalleutnant Ludwig Ritter von Tutschek (1864 - 1937). He served with the Bavarian imperial army, beginning WW1 at the rank of Oberst (colonel), commanding a regiment serving on the Western Front in France. He was promoted to the rank of Generalmajor, commanding divisions, eventually becoming the commander of the prestigious Alpenkorps German mountain troops in early September 1917. He commanded this formation until the end of the war, playing an important role in the major Italian defeat at the famous Battle of Caporetto (future Field Marshals Erwin Rommel and Ferdinand Schörner served under v. Tutschek). His formation ended the war conducting defensive battles in Northern France.
Ritter v. Tutschek (he was given his noble title during the war) was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class and 1st class during the war, as well as the prestigious Pour le Mérite (“Blue Max”) medal, which can be seen in the photo. He was promoted to Generalleutnant after WW1, in 1920.
The signature is a little faded, though it’s been compared with documents bearing the general’s signature and has been authenticated in this manner. The photo measures around 13cm x 8.5cm. See photos for details. Interesting piece of history.
